Growing Future Talent at Ecogee: Joseph’s Apprenticeship Journey

At Ecogee, investing in people is at the heart of how we work. As the business continues to grow, so does our commitment to developing future talent, and apprenticeships play a vital role.

We recently caught up with Joseph, Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Ecogee, who is currently completing his Quantity Surveying apprenticeship, in his first year at university.

Why Joseph chose quantity surveying

“I was attracted to quantity surveying as I could see that there was a good mix of office work and site work, with opportunities to progress. Quantity surveying is about managing the costs of construction projects from start to finish.”

Why an apprenticeship was the right path

For Joseph, combining hands‑on learning with academic study offered the best of both worlds – real responsibility, real projects, and real development.

“I chose to complete an apprenticeship because I think it’s better to get the experience as well as the education.”

A Day in the Life of an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor

“In a typical day, I come into work, check my emails first of all. Depending on the project, I might be on site or in the office. My work can include updating cost sheets, submitting information for invoicing, checking subcontractor invoices, and getting involved in tendering when required.”

How an apprenticeship has developed Joseph’s skills

“Since starting my apprenticeship at Ecogee, I have developed my communication and teamwork skills. I have found it useful developing my understanding of construction processes and industry software.”

Challenges and growth

“I have enjoyed my whole apprenticeship. I have experienced some challenges, but not many – but I believe they help your grow and improve your problem skills!”

How Ecogee have supported Joseph throughout his apprenticeship

“My team is very good! I have my manager, Josh, who has helped me a lot, and Sophie, who I work with. They are the two people who support me the most throughout my apprenticeship.”

Joseph has been surrounded by a team that is committed to helping him grow, learn, and succeed. Their mentorship has given Joseph the confidence to take on new responsibilities, ask questions, and develop his skills in a real project environment.

The positive impact of an apprenticeship

“My apprenticeship has helped me grow by building my confidence, skills, and professionalism.”

Joseph’s career goals after his apprenticeship

“After I complete my apprenticeship, I want to keep developing my technical knowledge and work towards becoming a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor. I want to gain more experience in cost management and start leading my own packages.”

Advice for someone thinking about an apprenticeship?

“I would advise them to do it as I think it’s a better way to learn!”

If you want hands‑on experience, real responsibility, and a pathway into a rewarding career, an apprenticeship is a brilliant place to start.
